Leftist Movie Night is pairing up with Decrim 305 for our September Leftist Movie Night. We are screening one of the most controversial movies ever made: BELLE DE JOUR, directed by anti-fascist surrealist Luis Buñuel. 

Catherine Deneuve stars as the beautiful Séverine, a sexually repressed Parisian housewife who loves her handsome husband Pierre (Jean Sorel) but is not sexually attracted to him. Bored with her upper class lifestyle, she often daydreams about masochistic fantasies involving bondage and domination. She soon starts working for a high class brothel during daytime hours while her husband is at work, leading to her moniker Belle de Jour ("Beauty of the Day"). Her new job is a rebellion against the tedious banality of bourgeois routines, but what will happen when her husband finds out about her double life? 

Considered one of the greatest movies ever made, this surreal and erotic late 60s daydream is a Freudian examination of fetishistic pleasure, social mores, and class divisions. Come see the biggest hit of Buñuel's career and the movie that solidified Deneuve as an international star.
