<sup>In honor of Halloween, Leftist Movie Night is screening the horror classic CANDYMAN, directed by Bernard Rose, a hit movie that examined the race and class divides of early 1990s Chicago.

Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) is a graduate student writing her thesis on urban legends. She becomes obsessed with the legend of Candyman (Tony Todd), a supernatural serial killer allegedly haunting the Cabrini-Green public housing project. Mardsen and her friend Bernadette (Kasi Lemmons) investigate the murders on site, terrified by Cabrini-Green’s dangerous reputation, and find out exactly how much the residents truly believe in this entity. What happens when Helen starts believing too? And what happens when you say “Candyman” five times in front of a mirror?

Based on a short story by queer genre icon Clive Barker, CANDYMAN was embraced by Black horror fans for tying supernatural horror to the horrors of American history: slavery and systemic neglect. The film was followed by sequels, including a legacy sequel produced by Jordan Peele, but nothing comes close to the original. We will be screening the uncut version, featuring more graphic violence that was originally cut to avoid the NC-17 rating.</sup>
